Temporary in-home care for pets in need
Killeen, Texas

We believe in temporary fixes

What we do for the animals

We maintain a list of contacts in the greater Killeen, Texas area. When one of the local rescue groups need a place for one (or more) of their animals to stay (foster home), we try to match volunteer foster homes with needy animals.
Dec. 1, 2011: We have started to take sign-ups on Facebook. If you have a Facebook account, please comment on our wall what type animal, size, gender or any other preference you have for your foster. Most local rescues are very active on Facebook, and can easily contact you that way.

What you need to know

You become a pet foster when you open your home to one or more small animals in need of a temporary home. This pet will stay with you for however long you and the rescue agree to. While the pet is at your house, you are fully responsible for their care. You groom them, feed them, clean up after them, and take them to the vet as needed. (Note: You are not responsible for paying the vet bill as long as you coordinate with the rescue prior to vet visit and use the vet they tell you to use.)

Please note: Our foster pets will need to live indoors, not outdoors, please keep this in mind when offering to foster. Also, please do not try to take in a foster pet only because your pet "needs a friend." It is simply not fair to either pet when the foster pet is adopted. Pets do grieve when their friends are taken from them. If you are looking for a friend for your pet, please consider adoption which is a more permanent solution for your pet.

My landlord doesn't allow pets or my roommates does not want a pet, may I still foster?

No. If you are not allowed to have pets, we must refuse to allow you to foster.

Can I adopt the pet if I fall in love?

If you fall in love with the pet, and request to adopt them, we will give you the option to adopt first. You will pay the adoption fee and if you keep any cages or equipment provided to you during the foster period, you will be asked to pay for those as we will need to replace them for the next foster home.

Are there any rules?

Yes. You must be over 18, and you have to live in a place where pets are allowed. On Fort Hood, Foster pets do not fall under the household limit. You will just have to be able to provide proof that you are fostering.

If you live in an apartment that has a pet limit, you may want to check with management and see if fostering falls under that rule or not.

Fostering is like having a pet in all respects except that the pet leaves eventually to go to their forever home. By fostering, you are giving a pet a place of sanctuary.
